DEDICATEDengines is using ZigBee mesh networking radio technology to help to monitor and control the temperature of work places and storage areas in a chain of well known UK retail outlets.

In conjunction with their facilities manager, who uses DEDICATEDengines system to remotely monitor the client’s nationwide estate, most outlets in the 100 property chain have already seen ZigBee technology installed.

“Because there are no power or signal wires to cater for, the installation project team are seeing great advantages from using the standalone battery powered ZigBee enabled sensors,” says Mike Brand - DEDICATEDengines Business Development Manager. “We have found the wall mounted sensors are quick to fit, easy to position and we are expecting years of battery life from them. ZigBee was the only wireless technology that gave us this critical combination of low power consumption and robust networking in a truly flexible & scalable form.”

The temperature monitoring end devices automatically mesh with the hardwired ZigBee backbone in each outlet with a ZigBee co-ordinator connected directly to the local DEDICATEDengines base unit. There the temperature data is added to other information collected by the existing hardwired monitoring system and the combined data is transmitted off site.

This implementation reflects back to the client in terms of minimised installation time and cost and this has meant that the estate has come on line more quickly.

Having demonstrated its capability ZigBee is now being looked at to add additional functionality and capability to the monitoring system – not only in retail outlets but also in other environments where DEDICATEDengines offers its products and services.
